Mary Nowak Spokane

Funeral Mass for Mary Margaret Nowak, will be at 10 a.m. today at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Nowak, 70, died Thursday.

She was born in Spokane and graduated from Holy Names Academy.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Spokane Chiefs Booster Club and Our Lady of Lourdes Cathedral Parish.

Her husband, Thomas, died in 1980.

She is survived by two sons, James and Thomas Nowak, both of Spokane; four daughters, Mary Elizabeth Vanderbeck of San Leandro, Calif., and Linda, Jill and Margaret Nowak, all of Spokane; two brothers, Francis Potesky of Walla Walla and James Potesky of Spokane; a sister, RoseAnn Potesky of Spokane; and eight grandchildren.

Linda Lewis Spokane

Funeral Mass for Linda Diane Lewis, 46, will be at 10 a.m. today at Mary Queen Catholic Church. Burial service will follow at Greenwood Memorial Terrace. Hennessey-Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Lewis, who died Saturday, was a lifetime Spokane resident.

She had worked as a travel agent and was a member of Mary Queen Parish.

Mrs. Lewis is survived by her husband of 14 years, Earl; four sons, Jeffrey Lewis of Seattle, and Brian and Kevin and Jason Lewis, all of Spokane; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Colistro of Spokane; and a sister, Marilyn Hoffman of Spokane.

Patricia Boyd Spokane

Private cremation will be held for Patricia L. Boyd, 85. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Miss Boyd, who was born in Portland, died Wednesday.

She had worked as a travel agent and was a 24-year Spokane resident.

She is survived by two nieces, Marian Kafflen of Spokane and Beverly Southworth of Los Angeles.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Rockwood Residents Foundation, Health Care Renovation.

James Burns St. Maries

Graveside service for James H. Burns, 73, will be at 3 p.m. today at Woodlawn Cemetery in St. Maries. Yates-Hodge Funeral Home in St. Maries is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Burns, who was born in Priest River, Idaho, died Wednesday.

He grew up in the Colville, Wash., area and worked as a logger and helped construct Grand Coulee Dam before joining the Marine Corps during World War II.

Mr. Burns moved to San Francisco after his military discharge and was a sheet metal worker in shipyards.

He lived in various cities in California before returning to Colville, where he worked in the timber industry.

Mr. Burns moved to St. Maries in 1961 and worked as a logger until moving in 1971 to Oregon, where he worked for the Beaverton School District and owned two self-service laundries.

He returned to St. Maries in 1980 and worked at Edwards Mill, retiring in 1985.

Mr. Burns was a member of the St. Maries American Legion Post.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Evelyn; two sons, Bill and Steve Burns, both of St. Maries; a brother, David Burns of Oregon; a sister, Mary Christman of Colville; and two grandchildren.

James ‘George’ O’Connor Spokane

Vigil service for James Patrick “George” O’Connor, 76, will be at 7 p.m. today at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes.

Mr. O’Connor, a lifetime Spokane resident, died Friday.

He served in the Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theater.

He worked as an insurance salesman.

Mr. O’Connor was a member of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes, the Knights of Columbus, Catholic Family Services board, House of Charity, and the Moose Lodge.

He is survived by his wife of 16 years, Marion; three sons, Patrick and Michael O’Connor, both of Spokane, and Kerry O’Connor of Cheney; a daughter, Barbara Cordill of Nine Mile Falls; and eight grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Spokane or the House of Charity.

Jeffrey Childers Spokane

Graveside service for Jeffrey R. Childers, 38, was Monday at Spokane Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Childers, who died Thursday, was born in Spokane.

He attended Shadle Park High School and later graduated from Spokane Community College.

He is survived by his mother, Mildred Childers, and a daughter, Jennifer Lynn Childers, both of Spokane.

Memorial contributions may be made to Sacred Heart Kidney Center.

Marialice ‘Mary’ Schrader Spokane

Memorial service for Marialice “Mary” Schrader, 67, was Monday at Northwood Presbyterian Church.

Mrs. Schrader died Friday.

She was born in Spokane, and graduated from Lind (Wash.) High School and attended Kelsey Baird Business School.

She had worked for several medical supply businesses in the Spokane area for 17 years.

Mrs. Schrader is survived by her husband of 49 years, Mel; two daughters, Julie Gay of Tigard, Ore., and Lisa Phelps of Spokane; a son, Paul Schrader of Spokane; and nine grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Northwood Presbyterian Church.

Ernest Nygaard Potlatch, Idaho

Service for Ernest O. Nygaard, 89, will be at 2:30 p.m. today at the Potlatch Community Presbyterian Church. Private burial will be held at the Freeze Cemetery near Potlatch. Kramer Funeral Home in Palouse (Wash.) is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Nygaard, who was born in Anamoose, N.D., died Saturday.

He attended schools in Potlatch and later completed one year of dairy science at the University of Idaho.

In 1934 he married Roberta “Bobbie” McBride in Potlatch, and they made their home in Moscow, Idaho, where he worked for Korter’s Creamery for 10 years.

In 1943 they bought a farm near Potlatch. They retired in 1980.

Mr. Nygaard was a member of the Potlatch Community Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include his wife, Bobbie; two sons, Gary and Don Nygaard, both of Potlatch; a brother, Alfred Nygaard of Potlatch; a sister, Gladys Richardson of Bonners Ferry, Idaho; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Potlatch Ambulance Fund or the Community Presbyterian Church.

Marie Robinson Spokane

Vigil service for Marie L. Robinson, 93, will be at 7 p.m. today at St. Thomas More Catholic Church. Service is planned for 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Robinson, who was born in Racine, Wis., died Saturday.

She had lived in Spokane for 77 years and was a homemaker.

Mrs. Robinson was a member of St. Thomas More Parish and served on the the spiritual growth committee, the meals committee, and the prayer chain at the church.

Her husband, James, died in 1953.

Survivors include three sons, Pat Robinson of Tempe, Ariz., and Mike and Bill Robinson, both of Spokane; a daughter, Jeanne Allen of Spokane; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Thomas More building fund.

Helen Mally Spokane

Funeral Mass for Helen C. Mally, 93, was Monday at St. Aloysius Catholic Church. Burial was at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Mrs. Mally, who was born in Padua, Minn., died Thursday.

She was a homemaker and a member of St. Aloysius Parish, the Altar Society, and St. Cecelia’s Guild, and the quilting group at St. Aloysius.

She was also a member of the Madonna group of Immaculate Heart Retreat Center, the 3rd Order of St. Francis, and the St. Vincent dePaul Society.

She served as altar-care chairman for 25 years and was named Woman of the Year by the Spokane Diocesan Council of Catholic Women.

Her husband, Lucas Mally, died in 1969.

Mrs. Mally is survived by two daughters, Betty Himmelsbach and Margaret “Maggie” Wohrle, both of Spokane; a half-sister, Lillian of Colton, Wash.; two half-brothers, Werner Mayer of Lewiston, and Orville Mayer of St. John, Wash.; eight grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Immaculate Heart Retreat Center or the Poor Clare Nuns.

Raymond Johnson Bellevue, Wash.

Memorial service for retired Navy Capt. Raymond C. Johnson, 64, was Monday at the Lake Washington Veterans of Foreign Wars Post. At his request, he will be buried at sea.

Mr. Johnson died Wednesday from cancer.

He graduated from Newport (Wash.) High School and the University of Idaho.

He was commissioned and earned the wings of a naval aviator in 1957 and served 12 years of active duty, including four cruises to Southeast Asia aboard the carriers Hornet and Coral Sea. He retired in 1978.

Mr. Johnson later moved to Bellevue, Wash., and entered the cattle business and was credited with being the first to introduce Norwegian Red cattle to Washington state.

He was a member of Delta Chi fraternity.

Survivors include his wife, Kathleen; a son, Gerald Johnson of Seattle; two daughters, Theresa Schoenfield of California and Suzanne Curti of Seattle; a stepdaughter, Alana Collins of British Columbia; a brother, Don Johnson of Worley, Idaho; and five grandchildren.

Randy Swartz Spokane

Memorial service for Randy D. Swartz, 43, will be at 2 p.m Saturday at Mission Community Presbyterian Church. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Swartz, a lifetime Spokane resident, died Friday.

He graduated from Rogers High School and worked as a dock loader for the Salvation Army for 20 years. He retired in March.

He was a member of Mission Community Presbyterian Church.

Mr. Swartz is survived by his parents, Duane and Gladys “Happy” Swartz of Spokane; and three sisters, Linda Noel of Portland, Vicki Dixon of Spokane and Bambi Swartz of Post Falls.

Jeffrey Palmlund Schiller Spokane

No service will be held for Jeffrey G. Palmlund Schiller, 27. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Palmlund Schiller died Friday from cancer.

He was born in Spokane and graduated from Jantsch High School.

He served in the Navy for one year and later worked as an attendant at Riverfront Park and as a doughboy at Godfather’s Pizza.

Survivors include his parents, Carol and Gary Palmlund of Spokane; three sisters, Heidi McGinnis, Monika Watson and Veronica Dorning, all of Spokane; two brothers, Jason Palmlund and Joseph Peery, both of Spokane; and his grandparents, Glenn and Thelma Palmlund of Spokane, and Julia Schiller of Germany.

Clarence Hattamer Spokane

Memorial Mass for Clarence W. Hattamer, 81, was Monday at St. Aloysius Catholic Church.

Mr. Hattamer, who was born in Wisconsin, died Wednesday.

He was a 57-year Spokane resident and worked as a superintendent for Standard Asphalt. He retired in 1979.

Mr. Hattamer is survived by his wife of 60 years, Virginia; two sons, Michael and Larry Hattamer, both of Spokane; three daughters, Shirley Sharp of Pocatello, Idaho, and Leigh Ann Duplanti and Jinny Lunzer, both of Spokane; four brothers, Ralph, Jim, Gerald and Clifford; two sisters, Janette and Frances; 14 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
