Hawks Sign Sixth-Round Pick Mili

Itula Mili, chosen by the Seattle Seahawks in the sixth round of the draft despite a knee injury, has be come the first of the club’s five picks to sign a contract.

The 6-foot-4, 265-pound Brigham Young tight end agreed Tuesday to accept a $532,000 deal that runs three years and includes a $41,000 signing bonus.

Mili tore two ligaments in his right knee during BYU’s victory over Wyoming in the Western Athletic Conference championship game.

He is not expected to be ready for workouts during training camp but may be able to practice by midseason and could then be added to the active roster.

Marinovich hurt

Former USC and Los Angeles Raider quarterback Todd Marinovich was injured Wednesday in a six-car collision in Newport Beach.

The accident occurred at 2:45 p.m. when Marinovich, 27, collided with a van driven by David Murray, 61. Four other drivers then crashed into the two vehicles, police said.

Marinovich suffered a chest contusion and was treated at a Santa Ana hospital, officials said.

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones expressed confidence that star receiver Michael Irvin, who announced last week that he was evaluating his future in football, will be at training camp. “We expect Michael to be a part of this football team,” Jones said. Irvin, who already has missed a Cowboys minicamp and quarterback school, announced last week that he has lost his “intensity and emotion” for the game and might retire.

Kevin Greene was a no-show as the Carolina Panthers opened a three-day minicamp, and the team said it would fine the 1996 NFL sack leader for his absence. Greene entering the final season of a two-year contract that will pay him up to $1.6 million this fall if he meets various incentives, asked to have the deal renegotiated but the Panthers refused. … Kansas City re-signed wide receiver Lake Dawson to a one-year contract, two days after signing free-agent receiver Brett Perriman.
