High-Level Iraqi Military Officer Killed, Opposition Group Claims

Associated Press

Armed dissidents in Iraq ambushed and killed one of the country’s senior military officers, a major Iraqi opposition group claimed Wednesday.

The Supreme Council for Islamic Revolution in Iraq said Maj. Gen. Ahmed Eziddin al-Dulaimi was killed May 29 while en route to his headquarters in Baghdad, the Iraqi capital.

There was no way to confirm the claim, made in a written statement by the Iranian-based group. Iraqi officials do not comment on opposition claims.

If true, the killing of al-Dulaimi would be the boldest opposition attack since the Dec. 12 assassination attempt against President Saddam Hussein’s eldest son.

Odai Hussein was released from the hospital this week. Gunmen shot him 10 times as he waited alone in his car in an upscale Baghdad neighborhood.
