Efforts For Cda Language Programs Recognized

At its third annual education powwow, the Coeur d’Alene Tribe gave special recognition to the following people: Rodney Frey of Lewis-Clark State College and Tom Flint of North Idaho College, who were instrumental in establishing Coeur d’Alene language programs; Felix McGowan, NIC minority student advisor; Reva Hess, Lakeside High School teacher who helped set up a language class at the public school; Jill Wagner of Washington State University, who developed the high school language curriculum; Raymond Brinkman, who analyzed the language program offered by Lewis-Clark State; and high school students Dennis Martin, Luke Sonder, and Bernie Twoteeth, who made a special effort to take advanced language instruction.

Gonzaga University debaters Ian McLoughlin of Coeur d’Alene and teammate William Brewer, Seattle, placed third at the CrossExamination Debate Association National Championship Tournament held recently in Wichita, Kan.

The seniors advanced to the final round before losing to Michigan State University. The pair is the only team in the country to qualify for the final four in consecutive years.

McLoughlin finished fifth while Brewer finished seventh at the tournament.

Lake City High School senior Dale A. Comer, recently won a first place award at the Idaho State Solo Contest in Boise for the instrument euphonium.

Sandy Short, a LCHS freshman, took third in the mezzo soprano division, and Brian Mueller, a Coeur d’Alene High school senior, placed third in baritone vocal category.

Comer, who will attend Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma this fall to study instrumental music and communications, maintains a 3.5 grade-point average in college preparatory curriculum, and received a music and academic achievement scholarship from PLU.

He also plays in school jazz and pep bands, the Coeur d’Alene Jazz, Christian Brass Ensemble and worship services in church. He has played in the North Idaho College Symphonic Band for three years.

Seven District 271 students qualified for the state contest by receiving superior ratings in a regional competition.
