Obituaries

Alma Bensel Diamond, Wash.

Rosary service for Alma L. Bensel, 83, will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Colfax, Wash. Funeral Mass will follow at 10 a.m. at the church. Burial will be at the Colfax Cemetery. Bruning Funeral Home in Colfax is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Bensel, who was born in Uniontown, Wash., died Wednesday.

She graduated from the Catholic Academy in Colton, Wash., and later received a nursing degree from the St.

Ignatious Nursing School in Colfax.

Mrs. Bensel worked as a nurse at St. Ignatious Hospital, and in 1940 married Joseph Bensel in Genesee, Idaho.

They farmed in the Thera area, between Colfax and Endicott, Wash., and in 1981 they retired and moved to Diamond.

Mrs. Bensel was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church.

Her husband, Joseph, died in 1981.

She is survived by a daughter, Donna Perry of Newport, Wash.; four sons, Duane Bensel of Beaverton, Ore., Neal Bensel of Klamath Falls, Ore., Barry Bensel of Portland and Brian Bensel of Tempe, Ariz.; three brothers, Otto and Joe Krick, both of Tacoma, and Paul Krick of Genesee; five sisters, Pauline Kasper and Eleanor Zaglow, both of Moscow, Idaho, Theresea Lundt of St. Maries, Emma Dahman of Pasco and Clara Voss of Princeton, Idaho; 14 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Whitman Hospital Foundation.

LaVerne ‘Vern’ Horine Veradale

Inurnment service for LaVerne Marvin “Vern” Horine, 73, will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Pines Cemetery. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Horine, who died Tuesday, was born in Palouse, Wash.

He served in the merchant marines during World War II.

In 1946 Mr. Horine moved to St. Maries, where he drove a school bus, and also worked as a logger and in a mill.

He married Aline Amos in Coeur d’Alene in 1949, and in 1962 they moved to the Cusick, Usk and Dalkena, Wash., area where he continued to work as a logger.

In 1966 they moved to the Spokane Valley and he worked for Spokane Steel Foundry, before retiring in 1971.

Mr. Horine is survived by his wife; two daughters, Cheryl LePoidevin of Odell, Ore., and Colleen Schmidt of Veradale; two sisters, Vera Icard and Betty Jean Swofford, both of Spokane; six grandchildren, one stepgranddaughter and six great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

John Schnell Spokane

Vigil service for John M. Schnell, 87, is planned for 7 p.m. today at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Funeral Mass is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Anthony Catholic Church. Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Mr. Schnell, a lifetime Spokane resident, died Monday.

He worked as a driver for the Spokane County Highway Department for 15 years.

Mr. Schnell refereed high school and college football games, high school basketball games, and the Harlem Globetrotters games when they played in Spokane. Mr. Schnell was a member of the United Umpire Association.

He was also a member of St. Anthony Parish, Eagles Lodge No. 2, the Elks Club and Moose Lodge, and Spokane Athletic Association.

His wife, Loretta, died in 1994.

Survivors include a daughter, Judy Rudy of Colbert; a brother, Louie Schnell of Clarkston, Wash.; and two grandchildren.

Mary Moore Spokane

Memorial service for Mary I. Moore, 63, is planned for 3 p.m. today at Heritage Funeral Home.

Mrs. Moore, who was born in Wannaska, Minn., died Wednesday.

She graduated from Pullman High School and attended Whitworth College.

She had lived in Spokane for 46 years and worked as a waitress for the Noodle Grill, Rocky Cafe and Mother’s Kitchen.

In 1978 she married James Moore in Spokane.

Mrs. Moore is survived by her husband; a son, James Truean of Spokane; three daughters, Terri Blenz of Deer Park, Sharon Pietarila of Emporia, Kan., and Tina Roach of Spokane; her mother, Jennie Dahlstrom of Spokane; two brothers, Conrad and Ed Dahlstrom, both of Spokane; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Memorial contributions may be made to National Kidney Foundation or to the SIDS Foundation.

Jeanette Bridgeman Harrison, Idaho

Service for Jeanette M. Bridgeman, 84, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Harrison Community Baptist Church. Yates-Hodge Funeral Home in St. Maries is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Bridgeman, who was born in Minnesota, died Wednesday. She moved to Harrison in 1937 and was a homemaker.

She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge and the Harrison Community Baptist Church.

Her husband, Jack, died in 1978.

Mrs. Bridgeman is survived by two sons, Dennis Bridgeman of Harrison, and Donald Bridgeman of Puyallup, Wash.; a daughter, Janice Etchison of Edmonds, Wash.; a sister, Bernice Hayome of Montana; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Patrick McGee Spokane

Funeral Mass for Patrick John McGee, 70, is planned for 11 a.m. today at St. Anthony Catholic Church. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. McGee, who was born in Spokane, died Wednesday.

He attended Gonzaga High School and graduated from Eastern Washington University.

He served in the 34th Combat Engineers Battalion in Korea during World War II and later taught and coached in School District 81 for 28 years.

Mr. McGee was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus No. 683, Disabled American Veterans, and volunteered for OMEGA.

Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Jean; three sons, David, Tim, and Matt McGee, all of Spokane; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Dorothy Gould Spokane

Visitation for Dorothy M. Gould, 63, is scheduled from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home. Service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Gould died Tuesday.

She was a lifetime Spokane resident and a homemaker.

Survivors include her parents, Harold and Florence Moreland of Newport, Wash.; six children, Tim Gould of Sacramento, Calif., Robin Johnson of Portland, Carman Gould of Texas, Sonja Brown, and Tina and Terry Gould, all of Spokane; two brothers, Raymond Moreland of Newport and Eugene Moreland of Portland; a sister, Patsy Dietz of Spokane; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Ronald Porterfield Spokane

Memorial service for Ronald J. Porterfield, 45, is set for 4:30 p.m. today at the Audubon Park United Methodist Church. The Cremation Society of Washington is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Porterfield, a lifetime Spokane resident, died Sunday.

He graduated from Rogers High School and worked for Burlington Northern Railroad for 18 years.

Mr. Porterfield is survived by two sons, Mark and Matt Porterfield, both of Spokane; his father, Francis Porterfield of Post Falls; his mother, Margaret Bast of Spokane; and two sisters, Janis Phillips and Mary Kirtman, both of Spokane.

Myrtle McCord Wilbur, Wash.

Service for Myrtle McCord, 92, will be at 2 p.m today at the Strate Funeral Home in Wilbur. Burial will be at the Wilbur Cemetery.

Mrs. McCord, who died Wednesday, was born in Walla Walla.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Big Bend Historical Society in Wilbur, and Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Almira, Wash.

Her husband, Ivan, died in 1988.

Survivors include a cousin, Frances Peek of Reardan, Wash.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Children’s Hospital in Seattle or to the Wilbur Ambulance Reserve Fund.

Carol Redington Spokane

Memorial graveside service for Carol Jean Redington, 50, will be at 11 a.m. today at the Peone Prairie Cemetery. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Redington died Tuesday.

She was lifetime Spokane resident and worked as dental lab technician.

Mrs. Redington is survived by two daughters, Carla and Mary Redington, and two brothers, Robert and Douglas Anstine, all of Spokane.
