Bailey Outsprints Rival Christie To Take Fast 100 In Germany
Olympic champion Donovan Bailey of Canada ran his fastest 100-meter race of the season Friday, clocking 9.94 seconds to defeat arch-rival Linford Christie.
Bailey sped to a commanding lead after 60 meters and finished .10 off his world record, set at last summer’s Atlanta Olympics.
After causing a false start, Christie held off a late challenge from Nigeria’s Davidson Ezinwa in the race and came in runner-up at 10.05. Ezinwa was .13 behind the 37-year-old Briton.
Olympic champion Lars Riedel of Germany threw the discus a year’s-best 227 feet, 6 inches at the Live 97 meet.
Haile Gebrselassie of Ethiopia, the Olympic champion, won the 5,000 meters in 12 minutes, 54.55 seconds, 10 seconds off his world record.
