Meeting Monday On Plante’s Ferry Sports Complex

A pre-construction “doers” meeting for the Plantes Ferry Park sports complex will begin at 7 p.m. Monday in the University Room of the Ridpath Hotel.

“Main purpose of the meeting,” said project coordinator Gib Brumback, “is to formalize construction committees and begin the planning process and construction time frame for summer and fall.”

Brumback asks that committee members bring friends who wish to become involved in the project.

“If you are not involved or are not familiar with the Plantes Ferry Park sports and soccer complex, please place this date on your calendar,” Brumback said.

The project is a joint venture between the Spokane Valley Junior Soccer Association and county and state governments.

It calls ultimately for 14 soccer fields to accommodate growth in the sport, two softball fields, a children’s playground and other amenities.

Government sources have promised $500,000 in funding for the initial phases of the project.

SVJSA is responsible for raising funds for nine of the soccer fields after signing a lease agreement in the fall of 1995 to develop 35 acres near the park on Upriver Drive.

“This is going to be an exciting evening,” said Brumback of Monday’s planning meeting. “We’re looking forward to seeing all interested ‘doers’ at this event.”

Legion teams start strong

It took a puddled field to stifle the Cannons in American Legion AAA baseball league competition.

Thursday night’s game with the Royals was postponed because of wet grounds at Gonzaga University.

The Valley-based team, made up of players from Central Valley, West Valley and East Valley won its first three games, including two league counters.

They’ve averaged just over 12 runs and nearly as many hits per game.

WV’s Chris Hilsabeck and Jeremy Isherwood had five hits each in the first two games.

Isherwood has recently signed to play shortstop at North Idaho College.

EV’s Bill Tincup had a four-hit game in one win, CV’s Adam Boots had a three hit game and three others have had two hit games.

Meanwhile, in the AA League, Olympic Sports from University High is off to a 3-0 start.

Among team wins have been a 13-2 triumph against Spokane Athletic Supply (CV) and 6-5 over East Valley.

Chris Short had four hits and Kyle Sale homered during a 12-7 win over Kimmel Athletic.
