Orioles Rally Past Braves

The Baltimore Orioles won their second consecutive game in the historic interleague series between the teams with baseball’s best records, defeating the National League champion Atlanta Braves 6-4 Saturday in Atlanta on Chris Hoiles’ two-run double in the 12th inning.

Hoiles slammed an 0-2 pitch from Joe Borowski (2-2) off the right-field wall after striking out in his first five at-bats. The Baltimore catcher fell one short of the major-league record for strikeouts in an extra-inning game.

Arthur Rhodes (4-2) picked up the win with three hitless innings of relief. Randy Myers earned his major league-leading 22nd save.

Mets 5, Red Sox 2

New York

Mark Clark took a no-hitter into the eighth inning and hit his first career home run as New York beat Boston.

Clark’s bid to pitch the first no-hitter in the 36-year history of the Mets ended in the eighth with pinch-hitter Reggie Jefferson’s opposite-field single.

John Franco pitched a perfect ninth for his 17th save in 19 chances.

Rockies 7, Athletics 1

Oakland, Calif.

Roger Bailey’s eight-hitter and home runs by Ellis Burks, Andres Galarraga and Larry Walker powered Colorado to its first interleague victory.

Walker went 2 for 3 and raised his major league-leading average to .412.

Royals 8, Pirates 3

Pittsburgh

Jeff King hit two more homers against his old team, giving him three in two games, and Tim Belcher, one of the Pirates’ chief antagonists while in the N.L., pitched seven effective innings as Kansas City beat Pittsburgh.

Belcher (8-6) improved to 11-4 lifetime against the Pirates.

Reds 5, White Sox 1

Cincinnati

Cincinnati’s Kent Mercker kept Albert Belle in check and held slumping Chicago to four hits over eight innings.

Deion Sanders overshadowed Belle by singling home one run with his 500th career hit and scoring another.

Belle was hitless in four at-bats.

Indians 8-2, Cardinals 3-5

St. Louis

St. Louis rookie Matt Morris (5-3) pitched a five-hitter over 8-1/3 innings of the second game as the Cardinals earned a split in the first interleague doubleheader.

The Indians emulated the N.L.’s move-the-runner-over style and scored all of their runs in the seventh and eighth innings of the opener.

John Mabry homered in both games for St. Louis.

Expos 1, Tigers 0

Montreal

Pedro Martinez struck out a career-high 14 and pitched a three-hitter as Montreal extended its winning streak to a season-high eight games.

Martinez (9-2) ended a personal three-game winless skid and lowered his major league-leading ERA to 1.60 with his sixth career shutout and second this season.

Tigers starter Justin Thompson (6-5) allowed one run and five hits in seven innings.

Giants 10, Angels 3

Anaheim, Calif.

Light-hitting Rich Aurilia, starting for the eighth time this year, hit his first career grand slam to power San Francisco’s victory.

Aurilia hit a 2-2 pitch from former teammate Allen Watson (5-4) into the left-field seats with two outs in the second inning.

Jeff Kent homered twice for the Giants.

Blue Jays 3, Phillies 2

Philadelphia

Joe Carter, whose ninth-inning homer off Mitch Williams in Game 6 of the 1993 World Series beat the Phillies, hit a two-run homer in the seventh to lead Toronto.

With Orlando Merced on first, Carter hit an 0-2 fastball from rookie Ryan Nye (0-2) over the left-field wall after Darren Daulton had tied it in the bottom of the sixth with a solo homer.

Twins 6, Astros 1

Houston

Matt Lawton hit a two-run homer in the first inning and Minnesota snapped Darryl Kile’s personal six-game winning streak.

Twins starter Rich Robertson (7-3) allowed six hits in six innings with five strikeouts.

Cubs 9, Brewers 5

Chicago

Rookie Kevin Orie went 3 for 3 with a homer and Chicago beat Milwaukee before the largest crowd of the season at Wrigley Field.

Cubs winner Steve Trachsel (4-5) had two hits and a sacrifice bunt, despite entering the game 1 for 25 this season.

Rangers 8, Padres 6

Arlington, Texas

Dean Palmer had four RBIs and Rusty Greer kept up his torrid hitting as Texas won consecutive games for the first time in more than a month.

Texas went up 5-0 in the first on a bases-loaded, double-play grounder by Gonzalez, a three-run homer by Palmer and a solo shot by Mike Simms three pitches later.

Yankees-Marlins, ppd.

Miami

Gary Sheffield’s grand slam and five other first-inning runs were wiped out when rain forced the cancellation of the Florida Marlins’ game against the New York Yankees in the third inning.

The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader today.

Clearing the bases

The Braves played a second consecutive game without Kenny Lofton, who continues to be bothered by back spasms… . The Orioles’ B.J. Surhoff leads the A.L. in hitting with runners in scoring position at .408 (20 of 49)… . Houston’s Luis Gonzalez doubled in the 8th inning to extend his hitting streak to 18 games, the longest streak by an Astros player since Jeff Bagwell’s 18-game hitting streak in 1994.
