Whitworth Soccer Player Earns Semi-Pro Honors
Jen Tissue, a second-team NAIA All-American soccer player at Whitworth College, is off to a strong start as a semipro.
Tissue, who plays for the San Francisco Night Hawks, has been named to the USISL W-League team of the week for her performance in the women’s league last week.
Tissue was a standout at Whitworth and Shadle Park High School, from where she graduated in 1993.
Academic awards
More than three dozen Eastern Washington athletes earned Big Sky Conference spring allacademic honors in tennis and track and field.
Also honored were James Noble, a Montana senior from Kettle Falls, and Emily Thompson, a Montana State sophomore from Mead, both in track and field.

Baseball
North Idaho College won two and lost one on the recruiting front.
The Cardinals signed Australian Nathan Holmes, a catcher/first baseman, new coach Paul Manzardo said, and infielder Jeremy Isherwood from West Valley of Spokane.
Holmes was recommended by Lewis-Clark State College coach Ed Cheff. Isherwood, who hit .403 with 36 runs batted in, will switch to shortstop from third base.
Coeur d’Alene High’s Ben Johnston, however, turned down NIC to accept a scholarship with rival College of Southern Idaho. Johnston, an All-Inland Empire League infielder for the state A-1 runner-up Vikings, will play outfield at CSI.
“They have a world-class field, as nice as it gets, and they have a clubhouse for their ballplayers,” he said of the CSI facilities.
The Major League Scouting Bureau will conduct a tryout camp at Borleske Stadium in Walla Walla on Wednesday beginning at 9 a.m.
Players age 16-23 are invited and must bring their own equipment and pay their own expenses. American Legion players must also have written permission from their coach to attend.
The camp will be under the supervision of Carl Moesche.
Basketball
The highly successful and popular Seafirst Jammin’ Hoop Camp, for youngsters age 7-17, will return for an eighth year July 14-16 at Mead High School.
The camp is free but requires registration. Forms are available at Seafirst branches.
Youngsters receive three days of instruction from area coaches and NBA players. Last year it drew 1,700 in Spokane. Participants receive a camp T-shirt, photo and certificate of participation, as well as a barbecue.

College scene
Washington State seniors Isaac Fontaine and Jody Payne were awarded the Conference Medal by the Pacific-10 Conference.
Fontaine ended his men’s basketball career as the all-time leading scorer in WSU history (2,003 points), which ranks 12th on the all-time Pac-10 list. He graduated in four years with a degree in business management.
Payne led the women’s soccer team with four goals, two of them game-winners, and was a three-time conference all-academic choice.
The medal is given annually to the outstanding male and female student-athletes from each Pac-10 school based on scholarship, athletics and leadership.
Micah Davis of Spokane (Mead), a sophomore at the University of Oregon, was given the school track team’s Perry Holloman Most Improved Award.
Davis placed third in the steeplechase at the Pac-10 Championships and earned his first NCAA All-American honor, although his 8:50.68 didn’t earn him a spot in the NCAA finals.
Two Inland Empire athletes earned scholar-athlete honors at Whitman College.
Cindy Allen, a sophomore economics major from Coeur d’Alene High School, received a second straight honor in swimming. She’s the school record-holder in the 200-yard backstroke.
Mike Craven, a junior economics major from Spokane (Ferris), earned his third scholar-athlete award. He’s a key member of the school’s alpine ski team.
Golf
Reid Hatley of Ferris tied for fifth among boys at the Dropping Junior Championship in Boise two weeks ago.
Hatley had a three-round total of 6-over-par 220 at Hillcrest Country Club. Derek Fox of Coleville, Utah, and Mitch Bourgault of Lynnwood, Wash., tied for first at 217 before Fox won a sudden-death playoff on the third hole.
First-round leader Rob Selland of Shadle Park shot 221 and tied for seventh. Selland opened with a 70.
Mead’s Sara Northcutt finished at 234, including a final-round 74, to place sixth among girls. Bridget Johnson of Ferris placed 11th with a 242.
Eastern Washington sectional qualifying for United States Golf Association junior boys and girls championships will be June 27 at Manito Golf and Country Club.
The events are open to boys who will not have reached their 18th birthday by midnight July 26 and have a USGA Handicap index not exceeding 18.4 and girls who will not have reached their 18th birthday by Aug. 2 and have a USGA Handicap index not exceeding 9.4. The boys will play 36 holes and the girls 18.
The number of qualifiers to the USGA junior amateur championships - the boys July 22-26 in Newtown Square, Pa., the girls July 28-Aug. 2 in Tennessee - depend on field sizes.
Registration is under way for the first Wayne Blair Memorial Tournament Aug. 9 at Wandermere. Tee times begin at 1 p.m.
Cost is $25, plus greens fees, with proceeds benefiting the Spokane Americans youth hockey program, in which Blair was active.

The first Asthma Camp Champ Tournament will be Tuesday at The Creek at Qualchan Golf Course, featuring people primarily from the health care profession.
It raises money for the American Lung Association of Washington’s Camp Champ. Entry fee is $50. Tee times begin at noon.

Mountain bikes
Silver Mountain is opening a 10-mile signature route for mountain bikes, Slaughterhouse Gulch Trail, mostly single track from the Mountain Haus Lodge at the top of the mountain to the old mining town of Wardner.
“It’s going to be a nice addition to the rest of our trail system,” said general manager Terry Turnbow. The trail was to open this weekend.
The mountain is open weekends until June 28, then will go to seven days a week through Labor Day.

Senior sports classic
John Harvey of Spokane added the men’s 65-69 doubles title in badminton to the gold medal he won in singles at the U.S. National Senior Sports Classic VI in Tucson, Ariz., earlier this month.
Softball
North Idaho College’s first women’s softball team has received commitments from eight players, including several from the area, coach Don Williams said.
Those who have signed or made commitments are: Lakeland High pitcher Monica Hall and catcher Angie Tweedy; former NIC basketball player Jaime Richards; ex-Lake City High standout Laura Tolzmann, who is transferring from another college; Kolee Galeazzi, a shortstop for Idaho A-1 champion Centennial High of Meridian; outfielder Ali Gabica from Twin Falls; and sisters Jill and Jennifer Neeser from Marsh Valley High.
Williams also has named Renee Hoops, who coached Lake City’s junior varsity last year, as his assistant.
Miscellany
Todd Doolittle, director of Greater Spokane League sponsorships for Brett Sports & Entertainment, will join the sports team at KHQ-TV, channel 6, July 1.
Doolittle served as director of public relations for the Spokane Indians and Spokane Chiefs from June 1994 to August 1996. He has broadcast hockey, baseball, football and basketball on radio and TV.
Doolittle, a Spokane native, graduated from Gonzaga Prep and the University of Puget Sound, where he earned a degree in communications.
Dele Gunnerson, principal at Peninsula High in Gig Harbor for 18 years, will become assistant executive director of the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association July 1.
Gunnerson retired in 1992 after 35 years in the educational field.
The WIAA has renewed its sponsorship agreement with the Dairy Farmers of Washington for state championship events through the 1998-99 school year.
Deer Park High School has hired two new varsity coaches, athletic director Mike Blair announced.
Deer Park alum Jason Thompson, an assistant the last six years, has been named boys basketball coach. He replaces Ben Widman.
Doug McGill, an assistant at Rogers High School the last six years, has been hired as head football coach. He replaces Bryan Frost.
