Amber Calisterio Crowned Tensed City Queen

Amber Marie Calisterio, daughter of Edward and Karen Calisterio of Tensed, Idaho, has been crowned the 1997-98 Miss Junior America City Queen for Tensed.

Calisterio, who will be a senior this fall at Potlatch High School, is one of 15 finalists from Idaho who will compete this summer at the state and national finals held in California.

She is active in track, volleyball, outdoor activities, art shows, church group, and has played the alto saxophone since age 11.

Calisterio, who received physical therapy for two fractured vertebrae and a jaw injury she suffered in a head-on collision with a drunk driver when she was 16, plans to attend the University of Idaho and study toward a bachelor’s degree in sciences and hopes to pursue a career in physical therapy.

She hopes her current title will enable her to speak against drinking and driving. Her sponsor is the Lazy Pitchfork L Ranch in Tensed.

Erin Johnson, a 1997 Lake City High School graduate, was chosen as the Coeur d’Alene Rotary Scholar of the Month for May.

Johnson, a 3.94 grade-point average honor student and past Honored Queen of Job’s Daughters, was ranked fourth in her graduating class and has been accepted at Whitworth College as a pre-med student.

She served as secretary/treasurer of the Honor Society, co-chairman of the Renaissance Student Committee and was recently recognized as a Youth Volunteers in Action Super Volunteer of the Year as a fourth and fifth grade tutor.

Diane Riley, an educator from Athol Elementary School, was chosen as one of 10 1997 Century Awards Remarkable Educators (C.A.R.E) Award recipients from across the nation. Riley will receive a $1,000 personal U.S. Savings Bond. She will also receive a television, videocassette recorder, roll cart, video tapes and cable magazine subscriptions for the school.

Riley was chosen for her innovative integration of cable television programming into curriculum by using PBS’s Reading Rainbow to encourage children to write and illustrate their own books.

The University of Idaho College of Engineering recently honored local seniors from three departments:

David Hisel, Moscow, outstanding senior for computer science; David Weber, Moscow, outstanding senior for civil engineering; and Ronald Nelson, Sandpoint, son of Chuck and Lola Nelson, outstanding senior for electrical engineering.
