Shabazz’s Condition Worse, Says Hospital

Compiled From Wire Services

The condition of Betty Shabazz, critically burned in a fire 2-1/2 weeks ago, has worsened over the past few days, according to the hospital where she is being treated.

Since Monday, Shabazz has developed “serious medical problems that are typical of a severe burn injury of this magnitude,” Jacobi Medical Center said in a statement.

Her problems “are being treated, but they are clearly of a life-threatening nature,” the statement said. No details were available.

Shabazz, the widow of Malcolm X, has been in extremely critical condition since June 1, when she suffered third-degree burns over 80 percent of her body in a fire at her Yonkers apartment.

She has undergone a series of skin-replacement operations, which doctors said were her only hope for long-term survival.
