Valley Electric Only Unbeaten Team In Giants League

Valley Electric has moved to the front of Spokane Valley Baseball Giants League standings.

After two weeks into the season, the Evergreen Junior High has become the league’s only unbeaten team.

Included were wins over Spokane County Sheriff’s 10-1, Autocraft 15-5 and Perfection Tire 9-5.

Andrew Bower had eight hits in the three games, including three doubles and two triples. He drove in seven runs against Perfection Tire.

Eric Graczyk added seven hits, including three doubles and a triple. Pitcher Jay Pearson had 19 strikeouts in three appearances.

Valley Firefighters moved into second place with three successive wins and Broadway Eye Care moved up with two victories.

A trio of pitchers for Broadway Eye Care, Brett Neste, Travis Thompson and Michael Koentopp combined for 23 strikeouts.

Following seven scoreless innings, Neste’s two-run double beat Perfection Tire 2-1 in extra-innings.

Derek Hartzell pitched three scoreless innings, striking out six, and was 2-for-2 in Spokane County Deputy Sheriff’s one-run victory over Food Rainbow.

John Cox pitched three innings of no-hit 7-strikeout ball, and Ross Brower was 3-for-4 with a homer in the Sheriff’s Association’s other win.

Midget teams stay unblemished

Action Charter from Pasadena Park and a pair of East Valley-area teams have perfect Midget records.

Trailing 6-1 in the seventh, Action Charter scored eight runs for a 9-6 win against Neurosurgery Assoc.

Earlier, the team got no-hit 7-strikeout pitching from Kyle Janke and a game-winning double by Kyle Wilson to beat Olympic Sports 4-2.

Neurosurgery Assoc. won by the same 9-6 score in its other game. Jeremy Kline drove in four runs and Brian Moore two others by going 3-for-3.

Valley Kiwanis from Otis Orchards scored its runs on a two-run triple by Brian Danelo and two-run hit by Jake Sawyer as they teamed with Landon Beattie for a one-hit 4-0 shutout over Gibson’s Nursery.

In other league games, Jared Pence hit an eighth-inning three-run double to cap a 9-3 win by Tom’s Barber Shop over Dave’s Grill.

Trailing 3-0 in the seventh, the visitors tied the score, then scored six times in the eighth for the win.

Three players, Patrick Rice, Michael Jacobsen and Donnie Marcille, had three hits each in one game, and Scott Schmaltz was also 3-for-3 in another during a split of action by McDonald’s.

Competition close in Pee Wees

A dozen teams, five of them unbeaten to date, are in a close Pee Wee League race.

Three of those teams improved to 4-0 last week, two others are 3-0 and four teams have 3-1 records.

Medicine Shoppe scored 50 runs last week, for its 4-0 mark.

Ryan Ristau had seven RBIs with a triple and home run.

Josh Morse was 4-for-5 in two games and drove in a total of six runs to lead several with multi-hit games.

Pavillion Park got a 4-for-6, seven runs batted in effort from Travis Matthews and strong pitching from Scott Froelich, Braden Jensen and Kyle Olson during wins that produced a 3-0 record.

Bert Shields Auto Supply didn’t allow a hit or run while scoring 36 times in two wins and has a 3-1 mark.

Pitchers Jay Dee Edlund, Luke Raynor and Brett Riggin struck out Notebook, 30 of 36 batters and provided much of the offense. Ryan Bond went 3-for-3 with four RBIs and Matthew Winkler homered in games that Jim Psomas DDS won. After getting no-hit, 14-strikeout pitching from Dan Bennet, Brock Vestal and Kyle Kinneberg for a Monday win, Spears Used Cars lost for the first time to Dr. DeCounter.

Elsewhere, Scott Eklund drove in three runs for victorious Normas, and Eric Puyear was 3-for-3 for East Farms 2 during a 9-1 triumph.

Bandits win Skagit Valley tourney

The Brown Mountain Bandits swept four games to win championship of the Skagit Valley Invitational tournament in Bellingham.

The team, made up of University, Ferris and Freeman baseball players, beat Edmonds 6-2, Stilly River 4-2, Seattle Knights 12-1 and Everett 9-4 in the title game.

Freeman grad Ken Beeler hit safely in all four wins to lead the team with nine. U-Hi’s Brett Haiar was 4-for-4 in the title win for winning pitcher Chris McMurtrey, and Sean Ruscio won another game.

The Bandits had also won their two Spokane American Legion AAA games through Monday.

Soccer team earns premier status

The Spokane Valley Flash, a girls U-14 Select soccer team, earned Premier status with victory in a recent classification tournament.

The Flash, competing against 22 others seeking two Premier 2 and eight Premier 3 designations, won four straight matches to claim one of the P-2 spots.

The Flash beat a team from Yakima 2-1, one from Federal Way 4-3 in overtime, one from Redmond 2-1 in a shootout and over North Seattle 2-0 in the championship.

Members include Raeanna Jewell, Corinne Gannon, Jessie Torres, Jamie Danelo, Kris Perry, Brynne Boltjes, Kara Jordan, Erin Merriman, Lori Regnier, Brianna Scott, Mariana Sheldon, Michelle Tidd, Tasha Warwick, and Cheree Walser.

Coaches include Rick Grinnell, Gret Torres and Paul Danelo.
