But Just Remember, All That Glitters Is Not Good

So you think U2 is getting carried away with all the kitsch on its current “PopMart” tour?

Frankly, my dear, Bono doesn’t give a damn.

“Twenty years into being a band - I started at 16 - I’m amazed that we’re still getting into trouble for the same thing, which some people might call overreaching,” the frontman for the Irish supergroup told the Washington Post.

“I think it’s just curiosity, whether political or spiritual or musical.”

U2’s stage show includes such spectacular props as a 100-foot-high yellow arch, and a lemon that transforms into a mirrored ball.

It’s all for the folks in the cheap seats, Bono explains.

“The ‘70s idea of playing in a muddy field where two-thirds of the people can’t see or hear what’s going on is a retarded idea of what big rock shows can be,” he says.

Loose talk

Taylor Hanson, of the boy brother band Hanson, on the music scene (in Entertainment Weekly): “The alternative thing is fading. People don’t hate their parents as much anymore.”

And he’s still got that Kink leer

Ray Davies turns 53 today.

Guess she’s no longer dreading her locks

Formerly chrome-domed Irish singer Sinead O’Connor, famed for ripping up a photo of Pope John Paul II during a “Saturday Night Live” appearance, not only has grown her hair back but has reportedly become a Rastafarian.

Now he’ll probably get a big head about it

Garth Brooks fans Dan and Angie Wagner of Long Island shelled out $1,400 for an autographed cowboy hat at a Nashville music festival. “Garth is coming to Central Park, and we thought that buying the hat would be a great way to welcome him to New York,” Angie said.

And chanting, ‘Osbourne, baby, Osbourne!’

Ozzy Osbourne fans were none too pleased when the former Black Sabbath singer took ill and failed to appear at his namesake Ozzfest show when it stopped in Columbus, Ohio, this week. While members of other bands on the bill performed an “all-star jam,” including some of Osbourne’s songs, some in the crowd started tearing down fences and lighting small fires on the lawn.

But he hasn’t formally tenored an invitation

Luciano Pavarotti told reporters in his Italian home town of Modena that he plans to make a record with a group of guest singers including Michael Jackson. “We’ve started talking about it,” the opera star said.

None of that sweet ‘Baby, Baby’ stuff for him

Amy Grant asked James Taylor to do a duet with her for her upcoming album, “Behind the Eyes,” but he wasn’t impressed with the song she sent him. “He said, ‘I was really hoping if you and I did something together, it would be something really special. And actually I think that song is awful,”’ Grant recalled. “I fell out laughing, and he said, ‘Oh, you wrote it, didn’t you?’ And I said yes. It’s no longer on the album.”
