Hentgen Keeps Putting Up Zeroes

Pat Hentgen pitched a six-hitter for his third shutout this season, leading the Toronto Blue Jays to a 3-0 victory Friday over the visiting Baltimore Orioles.

Hentgen (8-3) has not allowed a run in 21 consecutive innings. The 1996 A.L. Cy Young winner struck out four and walked one for his A.L.-leading sixth complete game. He didn’t allow a runner to third.

Hentgen and Montreal’s Carlos Perez are tied for the major-league lead with three shutouts.

Mike Mussina (8-2) lost for the first time in 14 starts. The Orioles were shut out for the second straight game and have lost three of four.

Yankees 7, Indians 1 Cleveland

Tino Martinez hit his 22nd homer and Dwight Gooden had his best outing of the season as New York continued its mastery of Cleveland.

The Yankees won their seventh straight at Jacobs Field and are 13-2 there overall. They have won six straight against Cleveland and 27 of the last 36.

Angels 5, Athletics 2 Anaheim, Calif.

Kevin Gross, making his debut with Anaheim, won as a starter for the first time in almost a year and Tim Salmon hit a three-run homer.

Gross (1-0) allowed four hits in 5-2/3 innings, struck out seven and walked five in his first major league start since last Aug. 8 with Texas. It was the 15-year veteran’s first win as a starter since July 1 - also at Anaheim.

Twins 3, White Sox 0 Chicago

Marty Cordova hit a two-run homer and three Minnesota pitchers combined on a five-hitter as Minnesota dropped Chicago back into last place in the A.L. Central.

Danny Darwin (2-5) lost his third consecutive start.

Brewers 7, Royals 5 Milwaukee

Jeromy Burnitz homered, doubled twice and drove in three runs in Milwaukee’s fourth straight victory.

Burnitz, who was thrown out at third base and at home plate earlier in the game, homered off Tim Belcher (8-7) in the seventh to snap a 5-5 tie.

Tigers 12, Red Sox 6 Detroit

Melvin Nieves hit a three-run homer and Phil Nevin added a two-run shot as Detroit stopped Boston’s four-game winning streak.

Detroit, which overcame a 3-0 deficit, had 16 hits, including eight for extra bases. Deivi Cruz had three hits, drove in three runs and stole two bases.

Minnesota’s Bob Tewksbury has 99 career wins. … The Royals’ Jeff King has seven homers and 16 RBIs during a 14-game hitting streak. … David Justice was Cleveland’s DH after missing four games.
