Juniors To Get Free Tips From Pros

The Athletic Round Table will kick off its annual series of free clinics for junior golfers ages 8 through 17 on June 24 at Liberty Lake Golf Course. The opening clinic will be one of seven sponsored by the ART at local public courses.

All clinics will be limited to 50 participants and will run from noon to 3 p.m. Lunch, range balls and prizes will be included. Local club pros will give instruction on rules and etiquette, putting and the full swing.

Other clinics will be held at Esmeralda (July 1), Indian Canyon (July 8), The Creek at Qualchan (July 15 and July 29), Liberty Lake (July 22) and MeadowWood (Aug. 6).

Host golf courses can provide more information.

Match play on tap

The Athletic Round Table will stage its annual Junior Match Play Tournament at Esmeralda Golf Course July 29-Aug. 1. The four-day event is open to golfers from ages 8 through 17.

Competitors will be flighted following a first-day qualifying round. Entry fee of $10 includes greens fees and lunch for all four days of the event, along with tee prizes. Entries can be made by calling Esmeralda Golf Course at 487-6291.

More for junior golfers

The Spokane Youth Sports Association will once again be offering golf programs this summer for junior golfers of all ability levels.

Sessions for advanced players will be held all summer and include 30 minutes of daily instruction with a local PGA club professional, followed by nine holes of golf. The registration fee of $125 includes a golf shirt, balls and tees, loaner clubs - if needed - and four rounds of golf at four area courses.

Programs for intermediate players will be held at Esmeralda (July 8-11), The Creek at Qualchan (Aug. 12-15), Downriver (July 8-11 and Aug. 12-15) and Hangman Valley (Aug. 26-29). The registration fee of $85 includes four days of 90-minute instructional sessions, followed by nine holes of golf; greens fees for fall golf; balls and tees; a golf shirt, and loaner clubs.

Programs for beginners will feature morning and afternoon sessions on July 28-Aug. 1 and Aug. 4-8 at the SYSA’s North Complex. Each session will include 16 hours of instruction, along with an chance to play four golf matches at area courses during September and October. The $55 fee includes balls, tees, a golf shirt and loaner clubs.

Open bargain

Anyone looking for a true golf bargain might want to check into the Ghost Creek Golf Package being offered in conjunction with the 1997 U.S. Women’s Open Championship, which will be held July 10-13 at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club in Portland.

The tournament will be staged at the private Witch Hollow course. But for $75, spectators can purchase a ticket package that gives them daily admission and parking for the entire week, including practice rounds, along with a voucher for a free round of golf at Ghost Creek, Pumpkin Ridge’s public course that has hosted the Nike Tour championship.

The Ghost Creek package also includes a weekly ticket to the Safeway LPGA Championship, which will be held Sept. 2-7 at Portland’s Columbia Edgewater Country Club.

Tournament postponed

The third annual Inland Northwest Football Foundation Golf Tournament, scheduled for Friday at Hangman Valley Golf Course, has been postponed.

Organizers are looking at rescheduling the event in early August.
