Teen Arraigned In Killing Of Passer-By

From Staff And Wire Reports

A Tigard teenager was arraigned Friday on a murder charge and three counts of attempted murder in a gang-related shooting that killed a passerby five blocks away.

Daniel DeJesus, 18, was ordered held without bail in the Justice Center Jail. His next court appearance was set for June 27.

Kenneth B. Shanafelt, 39, of Vancouver, Wash., was struck in the head by a stray bullet as he and his wife walked along a downtown street about 11:30 p.m. June 7.

Police determined the bullet came from five blocks away, where at least 10 young men had been involved in a fight between gangs. Police believe DeJesus was the only one among the group to have fired a weapon.

DeJesus was at work when he was arrested Thursday morning. Police seized a revolver from his apartment.
