Football Summer Classic Sets Up Camp

Pleasantries don’t last long for the 80 players in the 33rd East/West High School All-Star Football Summer Classic.

The game, presented by the Washington State Coaches Association for AAA and AA players, is Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Albi Stadium. But the teams get down to business today.

Players check in this morning, have pictures after lunch and hit the practice field at 3 p.m.

Teams are headquartered at Gonzaga University and practice at Mulligan and Hamilton fields. Beginning Monday, practices are at 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., with the teams rotating fields.

The East is coached by Mike McLaughlin of Mead. It will be McLaughlin’s last official duty for the Panthers. He takes over at new Mount Spokane-Mead in the fall. McLaughlin’s assistants include Ferris head coach Clarence Hough and Mead assistant Larry Stranahan.

Greater Spokane League standouts expected to play are running back/linebacker Scott McGlocklin and two-way lineman Joe Collier of Mead, running back/linebacker Jeff Lafferty of Shadle Park and tight end/defensive end Bryce Stack of Lewis and Clark.

Linebacker Ty Gregorak of West Valley, and wide receiver/defensive back Forest Hulbert and offensive lineman/linebacker Serign Maron of Pullman head Frontier players.

The Athletic Roundtable is sponsoring the game and a halftime contest. One fan can win $10,000 by kicking a 40-yard field goal.
