Optimus Stove Expensive But Rugged And Versatile

Q. Gear Guy did a nice review of a modest alcohol stove, namely the MSR/Trangia MiniTrangia 28 recently. But how about that expensive new wonder the Optimus Explorer 11 which does diesel, white gas, alcohol and more? It is available for about 100 dollars from REI’s special order desk and soon maybe their regular catalogue.

Dan Keen

You’re right, the Explorer 11 is an expensive new number. I had a chance to use one this past summer and fall. It’s an immensely promising stove. I liked its rugged construction, effective built-in windscreen, simmering capability and easy-action pressurizing pump.

But I’m not ready to replace my MSR XGK II yet. I didn’t think the Explorer burns quite as hot as the XKG, for one thing (it could be it just seems less hot because it’s quieter). It tended to flare up during priming. I had a key part break. And its reliance on a small (and easily lost) sliding valve adjustment to adjust the air/fuel mixture is problematic.

In short, I hope Optimus takes what could be a superb stove and tweaks it a bit. xxxx
