U.N. Threatens Sanctions On Iraq

Compiled From Wire Services

The Security Council threatened Saturday to impose tough new sanctions on Iraq if it does not cooperate fully with U.N. weapons inspectors.

The unanimous resolution came after the United States and Russia struck a deal to increase pressure on Saddam Hussein.

The council expressed “the firm intention … to impose new measures” unless the weapons inspectors certify Iraqi cooperation when they file their next progress report Oct. 11.

The council also suspended the 60-day review of economic sanctions imposed on Iraq after it invaded Kuwait in 1990.

The move came after Iraq earlier this month barred the inspectors from three sites suspected of containing weapons banned under U.N. resolutions which ended the Gulf War in 1991.
