Iraqi Singer Denies Men Fired On His Car

A leading Iraqi singer has denied a newspaper report that gunmen fired on his car as he traveled to Baghdad to perform in honor of Saddam Hussein’s son.

Iraq’s Babil newspaper, owned by Saddam’s son Odai, on Saturday reported an assassination attempt on Kadhem al-Saher. It said the attack occurred while al-Saher was traveling to Baghdad to perform a concert to celebrate Odai’s discharge from a hospital six months after gunmen shot him as he sat in a car.

“I personally was not subjected to any incident,” al-Saher said in an interview late Saturday with London-based Middle East Broadcasting Center.

Al-Saher is close to Odai, and Iraqi opposition groups have long accused him of collaborating with the regime.
