Associated Press

So much for that perfect season.

After opening the Northwest League baseball season with five straight victories, the Spokane Indians tasted defeat for the first time Sunday night. The Portland Rockies scored three runs in the fifth inning and went on to a 4-2 victory in Civic Stadium.

Spokane, the North Division leader, and Portland, which tops the South Division, continue their five-game series tonight.

The Indians and the Rockies were tied 1-1 when Portland bunched a single, a hit batsman and a walk to fill the bases with two out in the fifth inning. Kent Zweifel cleared the sacks by tripling to left field.

Spokane took a 1-0 lead in the third when Jeremy Hill doubled off the top of the left-field fence, advanced to third on an error and scored on Rod Metzler’s single.

Portland tied the game in its half of the fourth by putting together three singles. After Jason Franklin plated Zweifel, Spokane right fielder Juan Lebron threw out Juan Alamo with a one-hop strike to the plate.
