‘Batman’ Tops ‘Wedding’

Associated Press

The weekend debut of “My Best Friend’s Wedding” was the best ever for a romantic comedy and for its star, Julia Roberts. But the biggest audience flocked to “Batman and Robin.”

The action-packed fourth installment of the “Batman” series with George Clooney as the Caped Crusader earned $43.6 million, according to estimates Sunday from Exhibitor Relations Co. Inc.

“My Best Friend’s Wedding,” with Roberts playing a woman who decides to sabotage the wedding of a former flame, brought in $21.5 million for second place.

The previous top-grossing romantic comedy debut was “Sleepless in Seattle,” which opened with $17.2 million in 1993.
