Williams Muscles Tribe Past Yanks

Associated Press

Matt Williams has struggled with his average this season. Hitting home runs has never been a problem.

Williams, who came into Saturday’s game batting just .225 with the Indians, hit two homers and tied career highs with four hits and six RBIs as the visiting Cleveland Indians totaled 19 hits in a 12-8 victory over the New York Yankees.

“I’m certainly not satisfied. Today was nice, but I’m certainly not where I want to be,” Williams said.

Sandy Alomar went 3 for 5 to extend his hitting streak to 25 games for Cleveland. Marquis Grissom matched his career high with five hits.

Rangers 2, Athletics 0

Oakland, Calif.

Juan Gonzalez homered twice and Darren Oliver combined with three relievers on a five-hitter, giving Texas a victory over Oakland.

Gonzalez’s third multi-homer game this season spoiled the major-league debut of Oakland pitcher Brad Rigby, who otherwise had little trouble with the Texas lineup.

Blue Jays 5, Orioles 2

Baltimore

Orlando Merced hit one of Toronto’s three solo home runs and the Blue Jays got another strong performance from their bullpen in handing Baltimore its season-high third consecutive loss.

Brewers 5, Royals 3

Kansas City, Mo.

Jeff D’Amico won his fourth straight decision and Milwaukee, the American League’s worst road team, recorded a rare victory away from home.

The Brewers stopped a four-game losing skid and raised their road record to 11-27 with just their fourth victory in their last 16 starts away from County Stadium.

Twins 11, White Sox 5

Minneapolis

Brad Radke won his fifth straight start and cooled off baseball’s hottest team as Minnesota ended Chicago’s seven-game winning streak.

Tigers 9, Red Sox 2

Boston

Tony Clark and Melvin Nieves each homered on the first pitch of an inning to lift Detroit to its third consecutive win over Boston.

O’s await arrival

The Baltimore Orioles played what they hoped would be their final game this season without Geronimo Berroa, who spent Saturday packing his bags and traveling from California.

The Orioles obtained the power-hitting outfielder from the Oakland Athletics on Friday for pitcher Jimmy Haynes and a player to be named.

Berroa was expected to arrive around midnight and most likely will be in the starting lineup today.

Clearing the bases

Detroit left fielder Bobby Higginson recorded his A.L.-leading 12th outfield assist when he cut down Boston’s John Valentin attempting to stretch a single. … Sandy Alomar’s hitting streak is the longest for the Indians since 1953, when Dale Mitchell hit in 27 straight games. … Kansas City’s Chili Davis has seven home runs in his last 16 starts, giving him 311 for his career.
