Grand Slams Power Zags In Banana Belt

Two grand slams helped Gonzaga University win twice Friday at Lewis-Clark State’s Banana Belt baseball tournament in Lewiston.

The Bulldogs (2-0-1 in the tournament) defeated National Baseball Institute of Canada 16-9 in six innings, then topped Portland 13-10 in seven innings.

Washington State fell to 1-1 in the tournament with a 17-3 loss to Oregon State in seven innings.

Kevin Workman homered twice - a grand slam and a three-run shot - and drove in eight runs for Gonzaga against NBI. Travis Knight hit a two-run double and Bryan Hunt a two-run home run in Gonzaga’s five-run fifth. Against Portland, the Bulldogs scored nine runs in the second inning, with the key hits being Jason Uberuaga’s grand slam and Donnie Murrell’s two-run homer.

Oregon State’s 10-run fourth inning keyed the Beavers’ victory over Washington State.

All three games were shortened due to the tournament’s time limit.
