Siphon Victorious

Compiled From Wire Services

Trainer Richard Mandella had a memorable day in the $1 million Santa Anita Handicap horse race.

Siphon, Sandpit and Gentlemen swept the top three spots in the 1-mile race, giving Mandella what was believed to be an unprecedented feat in a $1-million race.

Under David Flores, Siphon led wire-to-wire in winning by three lengths in 2:00, giving him victories in six of his last seven starts. Sandpit, who like Siphon is a Brazilian-bred, nosed out betting favorite Gentlemen for second. Siphon paid $12.20 to win.

Marlin was fourth for trainer D. Wayne Lukas, whose other entry, 1996 Belmont Stakes winner Editor’s Note, wound up last.
