Dollar Hits 3-Year High Vs. Mark

The dollar hit a three-year high against the mark Tuesday, rallying broadly on strong U.S. economic data, new hints of record German unemployment and more uncertainty over Europe’s proposed single currency.

The gains bolstered a view in the foreign exchange market that the dollar is likely to move still higher, particularly against the mark, based on the likelihood that interest rates will rise in the United States but remain static or fall in Germany, where the economy continues to languish. Higher rates tend to strengthen a currency.
