Knight’s 700th Win Keeps Indiana In Ncaa Hunt

Associated Press

Bob Knight reached another coaching milestone with his 700th victory and Indiana moved toward an at-large NCAA Tournament bid.

Andrae Patterson scored 18 points Wednesday as the No. 25 Hoosiers beat Wisconsin 70-66 at Bloomington, Ind., making Knight the eighth Division I coach to win 700 games.

More importantly, it kept Indiana (22-9, 9-8 Big Ten) in contention for a tourney berth going into the final regular-season game Saturday at Michigan State. Wisconsin (17-9, 10-7), also trying for a spot in the tournament, closes at home against No. 2 Minnesota.

Knight, who came to Indiana in 1971 after compiling a 102-50 record in six years as coach at Army, has a career record of 700-256. His only losing season was in 1970-71, when his last Army team went 11-13.

The Hoosiers were the last Division I team to go unbeaten, finishing 32-0 in 1976, when they won the first of Knight’s three NCAA titles.

(15) Illinois 90, Ohio State 83

At Champaign, Ill., Kiwane Garris, playing his final home game, scored 22 points as the Illini came from behind to beat the Buckeyes.

The win puts Illinois (21-8, 11-6 Big Ten) in a tie for second place in the conference with Iowa and Purdue.

The Buckeyes are 10-16, 5-12.

(20) Louisville 69, S. Florida 58

At St. Louis, the Cardinals, rated 20th in the country but only sixth in Conference USA, won their conference tournament opener by beating the Bulls.

Louisville (23-7) lost five of its last nine regular-season games and struggled to put away the tournament’s No. 11 seed (8-19) despite a 19-0 run in the first half. The Cardinals led 27-15 after the run, but had the cushion shaved to a point early in the second half and led by only three with 2:49.

Navy 76, Bucknell 75

At Annapolis, Md., Hassan Booker’s 3-point play with 1:04 to play gave the Midshipmen (20-8) their first lead of the second half and lifted them to victory over the Bison (18-11) in the Patriot League title game to earn an NCAA Tournament berth.
