Student Remains In Custody After Break-In

From Staff And Wire Reports

A 17-year-old Colville High School student remained in custody Wednesday in connection with a weekend break-in and vandalism at the school.

The boy was arrested Monday on suspicion of burglary, but no formal charges had been filed by Wednesday afternoon.

Colville police said a school employee saw the suspect in the school Sunday morning, shortly after midnight. The boy fled, but the staff member recognized him.

Police said the suspect broke into the school office and several classrooms and smashed equipment, including cash registers and computers. Camera equipment and at least two computers apparently were stolen.

School Superintendent Rick Cole said the cost of the damage still hadn’t been estimated Wednesday.

Detective Sgt. Ed Richart said the boy told police he broke into the school with a pocket knife, but officers could find no sign of forced entry from the outside. Inside the school, though, several doors were forced open.

The boy declined to give any motive for the crime, Richart said.
