Benny Joins Brian As Seahawks Land 2nd Blades Brother

Bennie Blades is joining his brother Brian in Seattle, signing with the Seahawks as a free agent after spending nine seasons with the Detroit Lions.

Bennie Blades, who will be the Seahawks’ starting strong safety, agreed to a three-year, $3.3 million contract that includes a signing bonus of more than $1 million.

It was an argument between the brothers in July 1995 that led to a fight in which their cousin, Charles Blades, was shot to death.

Brian Blades, a wide receiver for Seattle, was convicted of manslaughter and faced a possible 10-year prison sentence. But three days later, a judge erased the decision, ruling the case was too weak to even reach the jury.

The Pittsburgh Steelers surprisingly re-signed former starting quarterback Mike Tomczak to a multi-year contract after Tomczak agreed to a demotion to No. 3 on the depth chart.

Free-agent quarterback Frank Reich has signed with the Detroit Lions.
