Eye Injury To Gilmour Questioned

Associated Press

The Devils and the doctor treating Doug Gilmour apparently do not see eye to eye over the seriousness of the New Jersey center’s injury.

The team announced casually Thursday that there was nothing seriously wrong with the player’s left eye, which was struck by a puck during Wednesday night’s 3-1 victory over the Flyers in Philadelphia. The Devils said Gilmour would miss Saturday’s game against the Islanders and Sunday’s game with Buffalo, then would be “day to day starting Monday.”

But Dr. Pierre Goibor, the chief ophthalmologist at Meadowlands Hospital, who examined Gilmour Thursday, said Gilmour “has a serious injury,” and that he would continue to monitor the 33-year-old forward at the hospital to determine the extent of the injury.

Goibor said he would not speculate about whether the injury was sight-threatening or how long Gilmour would be out until he examined him at least twice more.

“I think the Devils will have some sort of statement tomorrow,” the doctor said.
