Ricks 71, CSI 67

Ricks College rallied from an 11-point deficit in the second half to stun College of Southern Idaho 71-67 in the opening game of the women’s Region 18 basketball tournament Thursday at Christianson Gym.

Trailing 60-49, Ricks closed the game with a 22-7 spurt as Kady Williams provided 12 of her team-high 18 points.

“We both had runs,” CSI coach Joel Bate said. “They got the last one.”

The Vikings led by as many as 11 in an unsightly first half mired by 32 fouls and 52 free throws.

Utah Valley 78, Snow 57

Point guard Kristen Pool punctuated the Wolverines’ rout by nailing a 40-foot shot at the buzzer. Pool was impressive throughout, piling up 12 points and 10 assists, often bypassing open shots to feed inside players.

Forwards Mary Hunter (14 points) and Lelei Salea (13) helped Utah Valley dominate the interior. The Wolverines outrebounded the Badgers 43-26.

Salt Lake was never threatened in its victory.

The Bruins led 29-17 at half. CEU scored just two points in the first 10:30 of the second half and fell behind 41-19. At one point, CEU had 23 turnovers and 22 points against the Bruins’ suffocating defense.

Salt Lake sophomore forward Heather Hofmann kept the waning minutes interesting with two nifty reverse layups en route to her 15 points.
