Moon’s Agent Says Seahawks Are Leading The Race For Qb’s Services

Associated Press

Free-agent quarterback Warren Moon will decide by no later than Friday whether to play next for the San Diego Chargers or the Seattle Seahawks.

“Warren would be leaning a little bit toward Seattle, only because it’s where he played college football and a place he’d consider retiring to,” Moon’s agent, Leigh Steinberg, said Thursday. “Again, discussions are ongoing.”

Steinberg planned to meet with Moon late Thursday night, at which time a decision could be made.

Both teams have offered Moon a two-year contract, Steinberg said. He wouldn’t comment on financial figures, but the Chargers reportedly have offered about $750,000 a season. Chargers officials think the Seahawks have offered more money.

If Moon signs with the Chargers, he would back up Stan Humphries, and Sean Salisbury would be released. If he signs with the Seahawks, he would back up John Friesz, a former Chargers starter and Steinberg client.

When Moon visited the Chargers on Tuesday, he said that if he lands in San Diego, he would try to win the No. 1 job.

New Chargers coach Kevin Gilbride was Moon’s offensive coordinator for four seasons with the Houston Oilers. Houston also had vied for Moon’s services.

“This process is extraordinary from the standpoint of a guy 40 years old who’s trying to decide where to play football,” Steinberg said. “Warren has certainly hoodwinked Father Time, or he’s rediscovered the Fountain of Youth.

“The reality is, he’s kept his body remarkably fit. He works out rigorously and is able to withstand most of the ravages of time. He still has a very lively arm and will help someone.”

Moon was offered $500,000 by the Vikings, far from the $4.3 million he collected in 1996.
