CV Girls, Shadle Boys On To State

Region IV consolation

Persistence and intuition were ingredients that got both Central Valley’s girls and Shadle Park’s boys trips to next week’s State AAA basketball tournaments.

Having a record-setting superstar on each team didn’t hurt, either.

Saturday night’s decisive games mirrored the nearly identical record efforts of Shadle Park’s Chris Anderson and Central Valley’s Crystal Lee.

The Highlanders defeated Kamiakin 48-37 after the Bears ended Ferris’ Cinderella state bid, 46-37.

Anderson erased Paul Mencke’s year-old tournament scoring record of 84 points with 95, including back-to-back 29-point outings in two Saturday wins.

Central Valley’s Crystal Lee also set a tournament scoring mark with 92 points, 18 more than CV grad Courtney Hepton. She obliterated the career scoring mark of Mead’s Regan Freuen by 36 with a three-year total of 192.

Shadle Park 49, Kamiakin 40

For 3-1/2 quarters, the Highlanders threw caution to the wind with a barrage of 3-point shots that got them back into the game after trailing the Braves by nine points.

But it wasn’t until coach Darcy Weisner called for a delay in the game’s final 4:30 that the win was secured.

“Call it intuition, guts, gambling,” said Weisner. “I didn’t want to sit on it. I wanted to get them out and attack the basket. It ended up going in that direction.”

The Highlanders led 38-35 on Anderson’s three-point play when they began to freeze the ball, and they outscored panicky Kamiakin 11-3 the rest of the way.
