Martin Wins Again

Mark Martin won again in the Stihl Outdoor Power Tools 300, at Hampton, Ga., earning his third consecutive NASCAR Busch Grand National Series stock car victory.

Martin again dominated, leading 135 of the 197 laps on Atlanta Motor Speedway’s 1.522-mile oval. But the decision remained in doubt until Michael Waltrip, the only competitor able to stay with Martin’s Ford, pitted seven laps from the end for a tire change.

David Coulthard, taking advantage of the misfortune of the favored Williams cars, ended McLaren’s 49-race Formula One losing streak with a victory early today in the season-opening Australian Grand Prix at Melbourne, Australia.

Marshall Topping was injured when his Top Fuel dragster crashed during a final qualifying run for the NHRA’s Gatornationals at Gainesville, Fla.

Topping was transported from Gainesville Raceway to Shands Medical Center, where he was listed in serious condition. Topping, a rookie in Top Fuel competition, did not make the 16-car field, posting the 19th-best time.

Chad Little of Spokane qualifed 32nd during the second day of time trials for today’s Primestar 500 NASCAR Winston Cup stock car race in Hampton, Ga.
