Petticrew Leads Lakeside To Fifth

By George, you set a school scoring record and a fifth- place boys State A high school basketball tournament trophy is the door prize.

Lakeside guard George Petticrew left his mark at the Tacoma Dome Saturday afternoon over and over and over again, scoring 32 points, 7 of 10 from long range, to pace the Eagles past Meridian 62-47.

Petticrew, who broke his own school mark of 30 points, scored all 14 of the Eagles’ points in the first quarter on 5-of-5 shooting, three from 3-point range. His first miss came 1 minute into the second quarter with the Eagles ahead 14-9.

“It was the last game ever,” said Petticrew, an all-tournament selection for the second year in a row and one of seven seniors on the Nine Mile Falls team. “And we’ve been together forever.”

Lakeside, moving up to 2A next season, finished at 21-5. It opened the tournament with a loss to eventual runner-up Cashmere, which dropped it into the consolation bracket.

“Fifth was the one we wanted, I guess… . under the circumstances,” Lakeside coach Kevin Mulligan said.

And it came with relative ease, thanks to Petticrew’s scorching start. In four games, Petticrew led all boys from 3-point range, hitting 17 of 33 for 48 percent. He averaged 20.3 points in four tournament games.

“He’s a big-time player in a big-time game,” Meridian coach Don McMains said. “It didn’t matter what we did to him. It wasn’t that he was getting open shots. We had a hand in his face and he was still making them.”

After hitting just 1 of 4 in the second quarter, Petticrew scored five points in a span of 8 seconds to widen the Eagles’ lead to 30-19. , Meridian (18-10), the team that sent Medical Lake packing on Friday, went on an 8-0 run which began at the end of the third and narrowed Lakeside’s lead to 43-38. Petticrew drained two free throws and Ryan Day hit from inside to end the run.
