Hone Writing Skills For Cash And Cds

Jennifer Hayes Gonzaga Prep

Essay contests provide a great chance for teens to practice writing skills and receive recognition for their abilities. The Peace and Justice Action League of Spokane is providing just such an opportunity.

The contest is unique in that entries may be submitted by a team of writers or individuals (ages 14-18).

Essays should be between 1,000 and 1,200 words and are due by March 31.

Essayists must write about a conflict between two or more individuals and how it can be resolved using basic conflict resolution skills.

Prizes include CDs and a total of $600 in cash for the top three individual and team entries. Complete rules and an entry form can be obtained by calling 838-7870.

College cash: The Multiple Sclerosis Association of America is sponsoring an essay contest in which winners can receive $8,000 toward a college scholarship. The contest is open to high school and college students; entrants will be judged in those two divisions.

Students are to write a 500 to 1,000 word essay on multiple sclerosis, its effect on the family and how society can improve life for the physically challenged. Students must also provide a minimum of $7.50 in prepaid sponsorship.

All entries must be postmarked by April 11 and be accompanied by an official entry form. More information, as well as an entry form, can be obtained by calling 1-800-LEARN-MS.
