Vandals, Then Wind Damage Clock Tower

From Staff Reports

Riverfront Park’s landmark clock tower was hit by several projectiles last weekend, grinding the gears of time to a halt.

The west face of the clock sustained what look like at least three bullet holes sometime between Friday and Sunday, said Spokane Parks Director Ange Taylor.

High winds later in the weekend caused the already damaged glass to break and push in, damaging the clock’s inner workings, he said.

Taylor has no damage estimate, but he said the clock’s age makes repairs difficult. Replacement parts often must be handmade.

The 155-foot clock tower was built in 1902 to alert passengers at the Great Northern Railroad depot of their trains’ departures. It was designated a state historical landmark just prior to the Expo ‘74 world’s fair. , DataTimes
