Kallas Steals The Show

The smile during introductions was a dead giveaway. Andrea Kallas was having the time of her life.

After 18 points, three assists and three steals in a 62-48 Central Valley win over Marysville-Pilchuck on Wednesday in the girls State AAA basketball tournament, the smile was even brighter.

“It’s like a dream come true,” Kallas said. “When I was little I used to come (to Seattle) and watch CV play.”

There were actually two huge Kallas smiles in the Kingdome, Andrea’s and that of her twin sister, Angela, who scooted north from Tacoma after she scored 13 points in West Valley’s opening win in the AA tournament.

“It would have been tough if we both wouldn’t have made it,” Angela said of the twins not playing together at state. “This is great.”

Andrea Kallas said the Kingdome was the perfect stage for her, and she responded by hitting 7 of 8 shots, plus all three of her free throws.

“I felt totally confident. I love it here,” she said. “I like the crowd. I like to please the crowd.”

Another first-round game at the Kingdome was more of a nightmare for the Greater Spokane League - Gonzaga Prep committed 27 turnovers, losing to second-ranked Mountain View 44-32.

The Bullpups face Eastlake of Redmond, which lost to Enumclaw 72-57, in a loser-out game at 1:30 today.

Central Valley gets its third shot at top-ranked Kamiakin, which beat Sehome 51-37, at 5 p.m. Unfortunately for the Kallas family, West Valley’s game is at the same time at the Tacoma Dome.

Defensively the Bullpups (20-7) did what they needed to do to slow down the Thunder (23-1).

Angelina Wolvert, a 6-foot-3 University of Oregon signee had just three points and five boards at halftime to go with three fouls. Offense was another story.

A 9-5 lead after one quarter turned into an 18-15 halftime deficit, courtesy of 2-of-14 shooting and six turnovers.

“We panicked on offense a little bit,” Prep coach Mike Arte said. “We looked inside way too early in our offense. We made one pass and looked inside rather than two, three passes then look for the post.”

For the most part, Prep didn’t have a lot of trouble with the press, which makes 27 turnovers, a majority in the frontcourt, more disappointing.

“Her moves are unbelievable,” Prep’s 6-1 Theresa Palmer said of Wolvert. “She’s one of the best I’ve seen.”

Palmer had 12 points for Prep, but 10 came in the first half. She only got up one shot in the second half, which she made.

“They started doubling us, going after the passes inside,” Palmer said.

However, she and Jennifer Williams both had eight rebounds to give the Bullpups a 36-25 edge on the boards.

CV 62, Marysville-Pilchuck 48

The game was supposed to be a cakewalk for the fourth-ranked Bears (22-5) but it was more of a sleep-walk against the outmanned Tomahawks (16-10).

CV never trailed but never really put the Tomahawks away. MP’s only double-figure scorer was on the bench in street clothes with a brace on her knee. Her spot at point guard was taken by a freshman with one game of experience.

Maylee Siekawitch responded with three 3’s and 11 points to help keep the Tomahawks within range of the Bears.

“We did not play that good,” Kallas said. “When we get a jump on a team we seem to get too comfortable.”

That led to 19 turnovers, but the Bears shot 48 percent (20-42) and destroyed the Tomahawks on defense. CV forced 27 turnovers, leading to 28 points on the ensuing possessions.

“Some of the bench kids played harder than the starters,” CV coach Dale Poffenroth said. “I think there was too much down time after lunch. They were ready to go at noon. We’ve been here before; the kids haven’t, but we’ve never had this (evening) time frame before. We have to do something about that.” The game started at 5 p.m.
