St. Mary’s Cub Scouts Win Pope Paul Vi Award

Nina Culver Correspondent

Cub Scout Pack 468 of St. Mary’s Catholic School has been awarded the prestigious Pope Paul VI Award for Excellence.

The pack, which includes 48 boys in grades 1 through 5, is the first in the Inland Northwest to receive the national award. Bishop William Skylstad presented the award to the pack during a recognition banquet last Saturday.

“They thought it was pretty cool,” says Cubmaster Kent Breckenridge.

In order to qualify for the award, pack members had to earn their religious emblems by completing an age appropriate workbook that contains lessons that reinforce their religious upbringing.

The pack also participated in several community service projects, including the “Scouting for Food” drive that took place last fall. Pack members also sponsored a family for Christmas and donated items to the Interfaith Hospitality Network. The scouts also attended a Diocesan Scout Retreat at the Immaculate Heart Retreat Center in September.

The award represents a big achievement for the boys and their families, Breckenridge says.

“It really involves the whole family, not just the boy,” says Breckenridge. Even with family support, the pack members did a lot of work. “The boys did a really good job.”

The pack has received a papal colored ribbon bearing the coat of arms of Pope Paul VI, a certificate, and each pack member has been given a uniform patch bearing the Pope’s coat of arms.
