Cold-Shooting Colville Settles For 6th At State

Colville missed a chance at No. 3 by missing 3 after 3 after 3.

The Indians failed on 25 of 33 3-point attempts Saturday and fell to Lynden 63-55 in the game to determine third and sixth places at the boys State AA basketball tournament in the Tacoma Dome.

Colville (18-10) came within two of the tourney record for attempted 3-pointers.

“We couldn’t get a shot to go in the basket - free throws, 3-pointers or anything,” said coach Bill Pilgeram, whose Indians nevertheless earned their first state trophy.

Colville also missed 8 of 11 free throws and shot just 32 percent from the field. The Indians had succeeded on 68 percent of their free throws in three previous tourney games.

The third-ranked Lions (25-3) didn’t shoot much better from the floor, but they owned a 50-40 rebounding edge and hit 18 of 22 free throws in the fourth quarter.

With runs of 9-0 and 11-0, Lynden reached halftime with a four-point lead despite an Indians run of 17-4.

Colville closed within two points four times in the fourth quarter, the final time on Jimmy Day’s 3-pointer with 1:42 left. But the Lions were able to power inside because 6-foot5 Mike Bowland and 6-3 Josh Salina had fouled out.

Jed Ortner’s assault on the tourney record for 3-pointers ended. The Colville senior made 14 in three games, but went 1 for 13 Saturday. Joel Schillinger of West Valley (Spokane) hit a record 16 in 1992.

Starters Sprangers, Day, Salina and Brandon True, plus top reserves Bowland and Paul Smith are seniors, leaving many holes as Colville moves to 2A next year. “We have a core of 4-5 juniors coming back and a good freshman class,” Pilgeram said. “It’s just going to be new faces, and we’ll find out if the new faces can do the job.”

Tyler Jeans scored 13 points and Bjorn Johnson added 12 points to lift the Tigers (21-5) past the Panthers (22-9) for fifth place.
