Hints From Heloise

King Features Syndicate

Dear Heloise: I have a very good hint for everyone. I am a World War II veteran and I have been searching for old buddies from my navy squadron V.B. 103 that served in England. The problem is that many have unlisted phone numbers, making it difficult to locate them.

I recently purchased a CD-ROM with millions of names listed, which helped some but not nearly enough.

In my search over the past few years, I found the names of two members who had lived just a few blocks from me and died recently, one in the obituary column, the other in the CD-ROM. A best buddy had been a mayor in California - a very high-profile position and I should have been able to locate him.

Here’s my point: If these people had not had unlisted numbers, I might have been able to find them much quicker. This can work for many other people who are trying to locate friends and loved ones.

I know this is not a household hint, but I think you will agree with me that it will be very beneficial to all hands. - Gene S. McIntyre, San Antonio

Your point is a valid one. However, many people have legitimate reasons for choosing to have an unlisted phone number. Thanks for writing and good luck with your search. - Heloise

Dear Heloise: Another good way to use a shower curtain is to spread it on the ground under your blanket when you attend an outdoor concert or play.

It will keep the dampness from soaking through your blanket as the evening dew comes up, or even keep you dry if the ground is wet from a recent rain. Then, after the concert, fold it up wet-side in and hang it on the line to dry when you get home. I’ve been using the same one for years. - Sue DeBettignies, Somers, Wis.
