Third Will Do For Saxons With Title Shot Gone, Ferris Stops Prairie Behind Servine’s 25

By The Spokesman-Review

Three months ago, a third-place trophy in the State AAA basketball tournament was a dream - at best - for the Ferris boys.

Saturday afternoon it was a disappointment.

Don’t get the Saxons wrong. Saturday’s 57-53 win over No. 6 Prairie wasn’t a bummer, but… .

“We should have won it,” senior guard Justin Bursch said. “It was definitely a disappointment losing to Mount Vernon (in the semifinals). It’s hard to come back and try because the one you wanted was gone.”

However, the third-ranked Saxons bounced back behind junior Tommy Servine, who pumped in 25 points on 7-of-12 shooting, including 5 of 8 3-pointers.

The Saxons (25-3) trailed the Falcons (22-4) 49-45 when Servine hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key with 2:36 to play. Jeremy Lucke followed with another 3 from the left side at 1:41 to give the Saxons their first lead since midway in the third quarter, when Servine put them up 34-33 with a 3.

Zach Gourde, a talented 6-8 junior post, tied the game at 51 for the Falcons. But Bursch scored on a putback with just under a minute to play to give Ferris the lead for good. Servine made four free throws down the stretch to ice the game.

“I would have thought three months ago we had a lot of work to get to state, let alone place third,” Ferris coach Wayne Gilman said. “I’m happy, but it does stretch your earlier vision to know you could have won (it all).”

While Servine carried the offense with help from Lucke and Bursch, Charlie Gordon and Jason Weatherred, who held Gourde to 12 points and four rebounds, handled the defense.

“The one thing that stands out is our defense has been constant at state over the years,” Gilman said. “Charlie and Jason are the unsung heroes.”

Although they just had 10 points between them, they also combined for 17 rebounds, eight on the offensive end.

“Coming off the loss was pretty tough but we wanted to win this,” Weatherred said. “We’re a little disappointed but we’re happy. We think we could beat everybody here.”
