Chilean photos at Met

An exhibit of work by contemporary Chilean photographers is on display at The Met.

“Artes y Oficios de Chile” (the Arts and Trades of Chile) will be shown until April 4.

Some photographers captured scenes of salt mining, weaving and woodworking, trades slowly disappearing in Chile.

Included in the exhibit are three winners of the Ansel Adams Award for photographic excellence.

Some photos are on display in the Metro Mall Gallery at Sprague and Monroe, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. The others are in The Met, and can be viewed from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday through Friday, and during the theater’s show times.

The exhibit is sponsored by the Foto Cine Club de Chile, the Instituto Chileno-Norteamericano de Cultura and the Washington State/Chile Partners of the Americas.

Spring classes at Corbin

Corbin Art Center’s spring quarter begins April 14 with a variety of day and evening classes, programs and workshops for adults, teens and children.

Included are an introductory graphic design course for kids, 8 to 13 years old; a seven-week class, “Writing Fiction for Money”; a three-week class for home-schooled children, “Drawing Wildlife Workshop”; and a one-day workshop, April 26, for teens and adults to learn to draw accurate portraits.

The classes are sponsored by the Spokane Parks and Recreation Department.

The Corbin Art Center is in the Corbin Mansion, 507 W. Seventh. For more information, class costs or a schedule, call 625-6677.

Art exhibits

Spokane Artist Edie Dunlap’s painting, “Beach Waif,” has been accepted into the Northwest Watercolor Society’s Signature/Invitational Show.

The painting, along with 47 others, will be displayed through April 23 at the Meydenbauer Convention Center in Bellevue.

The works of Gonzaga University students and an alumnus will be displayed in two exhibitions at the Jundt Art Museum at Pearl and Cataldo, beginning Friday.

Featured will be “J. Daniel Murphy: Contemporary Wood-Fired Ceramics” and “Student Annual.” Murphy, a 1987 GU graduate, received the school’s Adkison Award for the most outstanding artwork in the “Senior Thesis” exhibition. He received a master’s of fine arts in ceramics from the University of Iowa and is now a member of its adjunct faculty.

“Student Annual,” a faculty-adjudicated exhibit showcasing the works of current Gonzaga art students, features paintings, drawings, prints and ceramics.

Museum hours are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, and from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturdays. The museum will be closed March 28-31. Admission is free.
