(From Replay, March 18, 1997:) Crypto Star, ridden by Pat Day, got up in the final strides to win the $400,000 Louisiana Derby on Sunday in New Orleans. The name of the race was left out in Monday’s report.

NASCAR truck series driver John Nemechek sustained a severe brain injury in a crash during the Florida Dodge Dealers 400 at Homestead, Fla, a race won by rookie Kenny Irwin.

Nemechek, the 27-year-old brother of Winston Cup driver Joe Nemechek, was listed in extremely critical condition after admission to the neurological intensive care unit at Jackson Hospital Ryder Trauma Center in Miami.

Jeff Green passed Tim Steele with 14 laps remaining for his first career Grand National victory in the inaugural NASCAR Busch Series race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Michael Chang defended his title in the Newsweek Champions Cup tennis tournament at Indian Wells, Calif., rallying to beat Bohdan Ulihrach 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-3.

Crypto Star threw jockey Pat Day before the race, hit the side of the gate at the start and fell far behind before getting up in time to
