Quake Rattles Central Japan

Compiled From Wire Services

An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.6 injured four people, broke windows and disrupted some railway service in central Japan on Sunday.

The Central Meteorological Agency said the quake was centered 25 miles underground near Toyohashi in Aichi state, about 155 miles southwest of Tokyo. It was felt within a 185-mile radius.

A police official said the quake cracked windows of a city government building and a driver training school in cities near Toyohashi but did not cause any injuries there. Some 5,600 households in the city of Shinshiro temporarily lost their water supply when a pump stopped automatically during the quake, the official said on condition of anonymity.

Japan Railway East said 80 bullet trains on the line between Tokyo and Osaka were delayed as much as three hours, inconveniencing 60,000 people. Electricity for the trains was shut off while the railway made sure the quake had not damaged tracks.
