Bills On Write-In Candidates, Polling Places Pass Senate

From Staff And Wire Reports

On Tuesday, the Senate passed two bills dealing with election protocol.

The first bill, H167, was drafted by Kootenai County Clerk Dan English and Rep. Jeff Alltus. It would change the distance from a polling place in which people may petition voters from 100 to 300 feet, when on public property. Those who electioneer on private property may be within 100 feet.

The second bill, H205, amends the existing law that allows write-in candidates for non-party positions to apply only 11 days before an election. According to the new law, write-ins would have to make their intentions known 25 days before the election.

The bill would effect only local government positions such as elected fire district jobs.

Both bills now go to the governor for consideration.
