Cougars Lose At Cal And Then At Fresno

Josh Hannah and Jeff Prieto led a 15-hit Fresno State attack as the host Bulldogs handed the visiting Washington State Cougars a 10-2 setback Tuesday at Beiden Field, the second loss of the day for the Cougars.

WSU opened the day at Berkeley, Calif., where they dropped a single game 7-6 in 10 innings to Cal before going to Fresno for the night game

Starter Dave Wheeler (1-3) took the loss for WSU (2-16), while Bulldogs (18-12) starter Brad Tucker (3-1) picked up the win. Wheeler worked into the fourth inning before giving way to Wade Parrish, who finished the game for WSU.

Duane Stewart provided WSU with its only runs when he hit his second home run of the year, a two-run shot in the fifth inning.

Jason Hill’s bases-loaded infield single in the tenth inning scored the winning run in Cal’s victory.

The win for the Bears (13-17) went to Tyler Walker (3-1), who tossed the last 2-1/3 innings and allowed just one hit while striking out four Cougar batters. He was the fifth Bear pitcher.

Burdette Greeny started for the Cougars (2-15) and worked into the eighth inning before Todd Meldahl (1-1) took over and took the loss.

The Cougs, who hadn’t played for more than two weeks, had four errors that helped California score four unearned runs, all off Greeny.

WSU took a 2-0 lead in the first inning, battled back from a 5-3 deficit to take a 6-5 lead, then saw the lead and then a 6-6 tie slip away.

The Cougars had runners on first and second with no outs in the ninth inning but failed to score.

Lewis-Clark State slugged four homers, including two in a five-run fourth inning as the Warriors whipped Gonzaga University 11-2 in non-conference baseball. The Bulldogs scored only in the first and ninth innings, picking up just six hits against four L-C pitchers.

John Veitch (3-0) got the win for Lewis-Clark (11-5-1) while starter Charlie Zimmerman (2-2) took the loss, giving up nine hits and seven runs - only three earned - in four-plus innings.

Jeff Bowne and Jason Uberuaga had two hits each for GU (6-8-1).
