Man Accused Of Assault Beat Up By Another Man

From Staff Reports

A man accused of beating a woman in the Merlin Apartments was sent to the hospital with injuries after two good Samaritans came to the victim’s defense.

Gregaline Tyler, 39, of 1220 E. Glencrest Dr., was issued a citation for assault Thursday night, police spokesman Dick Cottam said.

Police say he has three previous convictions for domestic assault. Tyler was unable to give police a coherent statement because his mouth and lips were too swollen, Cottam said.

Tyler was arrested for assault but was not booked into jail due to the extent of his injuries.

Police responded to a call at the Merlin Apartments at Division and Browne at 6:45 p.m. Thursday.

When they arrived, the woman told police Tyler slammed her head into a wall and hall radiator and punched her several times.

Another woman witnessed the assault and attempted to help the victim, but she was also hit and knocked down by Tyler, Cottam said.

Two male residents, who weren’t identified, told police they tried to get Tyler to stop hitting the woman. When he refused, one of the men hit Tyler with a baseball bat.

The suspect fled to a nearby service station and a clerk there called police.

Both women who were beaten refused medical attention from the police, Cottam said. Police are still investigating the case and are trying to establish the relationship between Tyler and the primary target of his assault.
