Man Arrested After Fleeing Accident, Causing Another

From Staff Reports

The driver of a vehicle who fled the scene of an accident downtown created another one on the South Hill Friday afternoon.

Police arrested David R. Mills, 34, on charges of vehicular assault when his car clipped the front end of another vehicle at the intersection of 15th and Lincoln, according to Sgt. Dan Torok.

Mills is accused of rolling his car onto its top, leaving his female passenger inside the car and trying to escape on foot before police captured him at Eighth and Lincoln. He was booked into jail after being treated for minor injuries.

Witnesses estimated that Mills was traveling south on Lincoln at about 60 mph, Torok said. The unidentified male driver struck by Mills suffered minor neck and leg lacerations and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Torok said Mills, who lives at 508 S. Monroe, left the scene of a minor accident downtown without reporting it to police and tried to escape on the South Hill.

Witnesses told police that after Mills hit the other car, his back wheel hit the curb, causing the car to slide several feet on its side before it came to rest on its top.

Mills’ passenger, a 37-year-old unidentified woman, was not arrested in the accident.
