Pearsall, Hunt Key Gu Win

The alpha and omega were working for Gonzaga University on Friday.

Rob Pearsall and Bryan Hunt, the first and last batters in the Bulldogs’ lineup, keyed a 14-hit attack that carried GU to a 10-4 West Coast Conference-opening baseball win over Loyola Marymount at Los Angeles.

Both had three hits. Pearsall, the designated hitter, collected two doubles among his, the second delivering two runs in the top of the ninth to cap the scoring for Gonzaga (7-8-1). Infielder Hunt had his first home run, a solo shot opening the fifth inning.

Third baseman Jason Uberuaga also drove in two runs, both with sacrifice flies. The first capped a two-run second that pulled GU from a 1-0 deficit.

Scott Asan doubled in one run and Jeff Bowne singled in another in a three-run sixth.

Kevin Gustorf was the only Lion to consistently solve GU pitchers Matt Kearney and Matt Siwek, collecting three hits, including his first home run. Siwek pitched 1-1/2 innings of hitless relief to save Kearney’s first win.

Bucky Jacobsen drove home four runs with four hits to key a 15-hit Lewis-Clark State attack that carried the Warriors to a 17-1 whipping of Washington State in a non-conference game at Harris Field at Lewiston.

The Cougars (2-18) collected just five hits off Warriors (12-5-1) starter Matt Foran (3-1), who worked the first seven innings, and Fletcher Lee, who tossed two hitless innings. WSU starter Todd Meldahl (1-2) held LCSC without a hit the first two innings, but was chased in a five-run third.

WSU’s run came in the seventh when pinch hitter Brad Philley opened the inning with a double and scored on Steve Curran’s ground out. Jesse Hoorelbeke had two of WSU’s five hits, singles in the second and fourth innings.

Community Colleges of Spokane (3-3) couldn’t make a fourrun second inning stand up and dropped a 6-4 decision at Scottsdale (Ariz.) Community College.

Chad Kline had a two-run single in the second for CCS (3-3). Losing pitcher Adam Flohr (1-1) struck out eight in seven innings.
